Fishing

Cast anywhere there's real water, land a catch, and sell it at a fish market. No clock-in, no wanted level — just a rod and some patience.

How to start

  1. Buy a fishing rod at any hardware store.
  2. Go to water.
  3. Use the rod from your inventory, or type /fish.

You keep the rod. It isn't used up when you cast.

Where you can fish

Stand on the bank facing the water, or actually in it — wading, on a jetty, or on a boat.

Any real body of water works: coast, open ocean, lakes, rivers, creeks, ponds, the port, even storm channels. If you're looking at dry land, or you're too far from the water, the cast won't go.

Cancel a cast with Backspace if you want the line back before something bites.

Catching a fish

  1. Cast and wait. Don't wander off.
  2. When the bite hits, press E to set the hook. Miss it and the fish gets away.
  3. Keep the green bar on the fish. Hold Space (or hold left click) to lift the bar; let go to drop it.
  4. Fill the catch meter before the fish wears you out.

Bigger, rarer fish fight harder. Junk still counts as a catch — you can sell that too.

Selling your catch

Look for Fish Market blips. There are buyers at:

  • Del Perro Pier
  • Paleto Bay
  • Grapeseed

Walk up and press E to sell everything you're carrying.

/fishprices shows what the market would pay for the fish in your inventory right now. Prices shift each server restart — use that command for the exact number.

Rough sale prices

Ballpark before the market modifier. A good restart pays a bit more; a bad one a bit less.

CatchTypical sale
Junk (boots, cans, seaweed)Tens to a few hundred dollars. A waterlogged phone is the odd one out — around a grand.
Common fishAbout $3,000–$12,000
Uncommon fishAbout $15,000–$40,000
Rare fishAbout $40,000–$200,000
Legendary fishAbout $400,000–$1.4 million

Treasure chests are a separate bonus: extra cash plus a trinket, not a fish sale.

Tips

  • The water matters. Coast, open ocean, lakes and rivers, and dirty water (port, canals) all pull different fish. Move around if you want variety.
  • Time and weather. Some species only bite at night. Some only bite in the rain.
  • Clean catch. If you never let the fish leave the bar, you can get extra XP and sometimes a second fish of the same kind.
  • Chests. A treasure chest can show up during the fight. Keep the bar on it long enough to crack it open for bonus cash and a trinket.
  • Legendaries. Landing one is announced in chat. They're rare on purpose.
